A/V CLUB
BUT WHAT IS SIN, REALLY?

I joined Kit Kennedy on the Unchurchable podcast to talk about a relational reframing of sin as well as its impact on deconstruction, the church, and how to live in the fullness of being human.

RETHINKING REDEMPTION: GOD'S LOVE AND INVITATION

Part 2 of a 2 part discussion on the Ruah Space podcast. This episode focuses on understanding what redemption means in light of a relational reframe of sin. If sin is the movement away from relationship and not something that makes you "bad" or "broken," then what does the cross mean?

INTEGRATIVE PROJECT PRESENTATION

My masters thesis in grad school was that sin, ultimately, should be redefined as mistrust of relationship. Not any action or thing, but the initial internal turning away from another. Any act that follows is simply a manifestation of “sin” -- of the mistrust. This video is me presenting my thesis: “Reframing Sin: Moving from a Paradigm of ‘Good and Bad’ to a Paradigm of ‘Life and Death’ Through the Work of Saint Augustine” in a quick 10 minute presentation to my faculty and peers.

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

In 2016 I graduated from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and had the honor of giving a commencement address at graduation. The Seattle School marks one of the most transformative periods in my life -- both in personal growth and in experiences of grief -- and my address spoke to the unique invitation TSS has in inviting its students into the messiness of life in order to get through to the other side more alive.

"DO YOU NOT KNOW?" — FINDING OURSELVES IN THE GOSPEL MOVEMENT

In 2015 I gave a sermon at Bethany Community Church in West Seattle on 1 Corinthians 9:23-10:13. The sermon speaks to how the gospel is not a static story to be believed or not, but an invitation into a story that is moving somewhere—and we are invited to participate.

SHOBE THIRST

Shobe Thirst: If You Weren't Thirsty Before... You Will Be After.

A commercial I made back in high school for a church jr. high camp I helped put on. This video (a play on the old Hume Lake Christian Camps "Schnapple" commercials) is of a drink company called "Shobe" that creates wildly popular drinks made of undrinkable, and at times, disgusting ingredients.

SHOBE SKERTH

HI, I'M MYSPACE (PICS)

A commercial I made back in high school for a church jr. high camp I helped put on. Back in the day when Myspace was king and Apple had the popular "Hi, I'm a Mac" commercials on TV, we decided to make Myspace/Facebook commercials that showed Myspace as the "cool" social media network and Facebook as the "boring" one, yet the one that offered the better services. Ironically, just like these commercials joked about, Facebook ended up becoming the social media of choice.

This video pokes fun at Myspace's limited picture allowance on one's profile -- and the "Myspace picture pose."

HI, I'M MYSPACE (BULLETINS)

This video pokes fun at Myspace's "bulletin feed," which at the time looked like a list of email subjects you had to click on to see the content and most of the time were worthless posts.
